April Foolishness

I totally forgot it was April Fool's until Diva told me that Superwoman had won £100,000 and was going to share it with everyone on her facebook. But anyway it was such a beautiful day, and we decided to go for a little bike ride then a walk through Regent's park. Oh what fun, and the weather is making me feel really enthusiatic about the summer, so bring it on.

Blogger seems not to want to keep pictures rotated! meh.

Booty booty booty rocking everywhere.

Day 2:- Knee High Boots To Ankle Boots

This is a really simple DIY and a perfect chance to transform some of your winter wears to spring ones.
I've had these blasted boots for ages, but being the hoarder that I am, I couldn't simple throw them away. So what to do with hideous boots, you ask......turn them in to ankle boots.

Firstly find the seam of the boot and if yours have a really low one then create one a little further up.

Then cut all along your seam.

Next try on the boot to see how the ankle fits and ifs its to large measure how much space you would need for a snug fit and make a crescent at the back of the boot then cut  along that crescent you made.

Next pull the cresent down to the point you have measured  and either glue or sew it down along with the rim of the mouth of the boot an Voila instant ankle boot.

Warning: If you are using a glue gun please be careful, I have lost skin to that bloody machine.

Anyway Til tomorrow

30 Days of DIY and Semi - Fail

So as part of my 180 in 180 challenge, I commited myself to do more DIY's and I thought I'd share it with you guys by doing a 30 days of DIY challenge. So firstly here's a little disclaimer: All DIY's are done by my poor hands, but I've been doing them since january, but April was the first month with 30 days (i like round numbers), so don't think that I'm doing them everyday. And I have a buttload of old Ankara so a large percentage of my DIY's will be made from Ankara. I'm also going to be doing a little Giveaway at the end of the 30 days so stay tuned. Any videos I post are my own work so please don't judge me on my poor video editing skills. And please excuse my chipped nails and busted and bruised fingers.

So now I'm done with my disclaimer. I hope you guys enjoy.

So I got these two maxi skirts which were originally from Primark, costing 16quid a piece for only 2 quid each at a local market both brand new and undamaged. I think I was so excited from the cheap find that I forgot to actually take a good look at them until my mum asked ' Why did you buy those, they're ugly' and boy was she right. The pleats kind of bunched up at the back to make it look like I had some huge disfigured booty and the length was all wrong.

So i decided to make it one of my projects. I decided I would make it an asymmetrical hemline.

I firstly measured how long the under skirt needed to be then whacked that off.

Now the thing with pleats is that you can just go mad with the scissors you actually need to keep them even. so after measuring where I wanted the shortest part of the hem to hit, using some sellotape I taped from that point at an angle to the point where I wanted it to stop (in hindsight i could have gone alot lower with the longer part of the hem) I made sure to bunch all the pleats together in a uniform fashion. Then proceeded to snip snip snip.

Now is was exactly 0.2 seconds after the last snip that realized that it was way shorter than i anticipated (i didn't  leave enough room for my thighs and semi-ass). But I decided to continue and began to hem the bottom the lazy girls way with a lighter, which I passed lightly and quickly over the edge.

I don't have any final Pics for it because I had to leave as soon as I finished it. But hopefully I'll do an OOTD with my faux asymmetrical skirt soon and i still have the pink one to play with. And I haven't thrown any of the cut-offs away, they are going to come in handy a lil later. (And for some reason blogger won't rotate some of my pics)

Til next time
Peace

New Naturals Essential Starter Kit: Tools of the trade

So Txuna and Superwoman are starting out on their journey to natural hair and I was in the process of making a folder containing all the essentials tools, tips and resources they would need on their journey when I thought I might as well share it with you guys to help out, even if you've been natural for a while or are relaxed there is still a wealth of information that you may find useful.

So lets begin with essential tools. I am a low maintenance kinda girl on a tight budget so for most items don't cost over a fiver. And you can still get good quality items at low prices. Its about being smart and taking notice of what your hair likes and responds to and what is an absolute no no.

So lets start off with the basic tools you will need. These are all products I use, day to day week to week or month to month.
These are my styling products a light gel, and Aloe Vera gel which acts like a sealant and helps balance out the Ph of some of the other products I use.
Conditioners, THESE ARE YOUR FRIENDS. I suggest trying multiple ones to keep your hair guessing. I have at least 5 always in rotation and separate 'cheapie' conditioners just for my co-washes. Look for moisture and protein, your hair needs a balance of these things to be at its best, but different strokes for different folks so definitely pay attention to how your hair reacts to protein and to moisture.
Shampoo. Okay as you can see this is quite old and that's because I only shampoo like once a month and I water it way down, as it can be really drying. I know quite a few folks who don't use shampoo at all but will opt for bentonite clay cleanses, bicarbonate scalp scrubs, MUD washes or Ayurveda methods of cleansing. However until you are comfortable enough with different practise's i suggest pre-pooing (a method of oiling or conditioning your hair prior to washing to reduce the harsh stripping affects of the shampoos) and then a normal shampoo.

Wide tooth shower comb, rat tail, Afro Pic, soft bristled brush.
The type of comb you use (if you use one at all) is very important to maintaining the well being of your hair. So start by limiting your use of fine tooth combs unless you are using it for a one off style such as shingling. A wide tooth comb is your new best buddy, for detangling and sectioning, but if you need neat parts then a rat tooth comb is your ideal tool, but only use the tail part and on well detangled hair. Your Afro pick can be used for adding volume at the root and sectioning to as well as a pulled out full on Afro (once again on well detangled hair) . And finally your brush, now this is great for edges and slicking down edges and in the brush department their are a plethora of brushes that can provide different affects but don't get bogged down with all the different brushes just yet.
Shea butter, Castor oil, Spray bottle with conditioner, water and oil mixture.
And finally these are for moisturising your hair. The yellow blob is actually Shea butter I got from Nigeria. My hair loves it but look for what your hair likes. I usually mix my Shea butter with an oil so its not as heavy on my hair and scalp. The basic oils i would suggest for newbies are Olive, Coconut and Castor oil. and finally yes that's an old fabreez bottle, don't judge! Its spray function is actually really good at giving a light spritz, similar to ones used for plants.  I have several hair spritzes, dependant on what my hair is feeling/ looking like and what the weathers like. This bottle has a heavy mixture of 2 parts conditioner, 1 part water and 1 part oil (Coconut and Castor).

Okay so those are some basic tools but I want to also add a silk scarf or pillow case is a godsend and your fingers are an amazing tool also (just make sure your nails are trimmed and smooth so you don't go ripping out chunks of hair). below are a starter list of sites, youtubers and blogs to help you start up on your new journey. And some finally pieces of advise, fall in love with your hair ( you'll treat it better) and keep it simple.

#TeamNaturalHairCare

For the longest I have been in two minds about whether or not I should join the natural side, and as of recently, I've been watching a lot of natural hair care videos on youtube and seeing images of natural hair girls which has been tempting me.

Cute cut and color

I have always been a short hair girl all throughout uni, and went through several pixie cut hair styles.

But about a year and a half ago, I decided to stop with the short hair and 'try' and grow out my hair, whilst still perming it and wearing braids and weaves.

It grew, but at a very slow rate, and unhealthily, with a lot of breakages.
Throughout the growth, I trimmed my hair a couple of times as it was growing unevenly quite frequently.
My hair genuinely doesn't respond to relaxers very well, and when I do relax it, it never relaxes fully and my hair tends still stay quite course and kinky as you can see below.

For the longest, my hair has not been its healthiest. It's about time my hair had some health and growth in its system.
The last time I permed my hair was at the end of summer last year, so I am tredding towards the natural side anyways.

So.... I have finally decided!

I AM GOING AU NATUREL!

Which means I am going to have to chop of all my previously relaxed bits and start of fresh.
I will of course have a deep consultation session from our hair and beauty guru... boo!coco,  and once I have decided on my own personal hair regimen, I will share it with you guys.
I have already decided on doing the usual braids as my protective hair style whilst its still cold here in the UK.

So, farewell to the relaxer kits, and hello natural hair products.
Here goes my journey to healthy hair!

A Year Of Events...

Ola meninas!

Yes I have been M.I.A, but no worries, I'm still alive and kicking.

It's only hit me recently, that I would be spending a mass amount of dinheros (that's money) on dresses this year.
Something I don't do very often since I'm not a dress person.

The hunt for dresses is going to be one hell of a mission whilst trying to plan and organise my mothers 25th wedding anniversary.

I need to:

  • dresses for a winter 25th wedding anniversary for me and the girls (a collective decision of course),
  • help find my mama two dresses for her big day.
  • a dress for a spring wedding
  • a dress for a summer wedding abroad,
  • dresses for (x2) evenings at the Royal Opera House
  • and, a dress for my partner in crime's mama's 50th anniversary.
For most... this would be a simple task. For me, a challenge indeed.

Let the games begin!

xoxo
